Yukimi is a Meiji period property made up of a residence and the tea house. The residence has a full kitchen and all the modern comforts. We have done a complete restoration of it, turning it into a very comfortable snowy home. The tea house was built for a wedding of a famous artist almost 2 centuries ago. It is a truly amazing piece of completely unknown Japanese history. The tea house looks out at a very ancient Japanese garden which during the winter is delightfully covered by snow. We have surrounded the tea house with floor to ceiling double glazing so you can sit in the tea house and "view the snow" which is what the word Yukimi means. It is heavenly.
Yukimi is at the bottom of the Shiga range in the lovely little town of Sano. If you book Yukimi you get a complimentary AWD car with snow tyres so you can explore the region and also get to the Shiga Ski Resort which is a 15 minute drive (to the first of Shigas resorts - There are lots of them). It is a 2 minute drive from the wonderful Snow Monkeys and a short drive or walk into the towns of Yudanaka and Shibu Onsens. Both the towns have fantastic onsens, some in hotels and some public. Just one street from Yukimi is also the local Sano Onsen for the houses in the area of Yukimi. It is very traditional and an experience for travellers.
Yukimi is an absolutely perfect place to explore the region from and because you will have a car it will be a brilliant experience.
We will never forget sitting in the tea room relaxing looking out over the ancient garden after a big perfect day of skiing at Shiga Kogen our new favourite resort in Japan. It was just a brilliant experience.
Having the complimentary car opened up the region to us. It was just the holiday we needed.
